Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium essential oil has so many wonderful uses! This post explores 8 different uses including for your hair, to promote healing, in a neuropathy lotion, and as a fabric softener!

A Long History of Use

Geranium is one of our amazing floral oils. Did you know the Egyptians used Geranium oil to beautify their skin and for other benefits? It’s been around for a long time! The leaves and flowers are also edible and are often used in desserts, cakes, jellies, and teas.

How is the oil harvested? The oil is collected by steam distillation of the flower and leaves.

So what are some uses for Geranium? Let’s talk about it.

But first, you can watch this short video to learn about some of my favorite uses and benefits of Geranium!

Not Just a Pretty Smell

Hair - Geranium is great for your hair whether it is dry or oily. You can add few drops to your shampoo or conditioner. Here is a recipe for a hair mask you can make using Geranium. https://www.doterra.com/AU/en_AU/blog/diy-hair-mask. Or how about a spray that can protect your hair from all of the heat from blow dryers and straighteners? https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/diy-heat-protecting-spray

Skin - Geranium has so many healing properties for your skin! Many people will rub it directly on their skin with or without fractionated coconut oil. Others add a few drops to their moisturizers. It can be used to help rashes or other skin issues.

Insects - Geranium also naturally repels insects. Add a few drops to your sunscreen or to your skin moisturizer. Geranium is composed of 35% citronellol which is known to repel insects. You can also diffuse it by doors and windows to help keep pests out of your house.

Aromatically - Of course, you can diffuse this fantastic oil. It has a naturally calming effect. Try these diffuser recipes.

Supports Healing - Geranium is known to help the healing process. Many people use it after female issues or miscarriages. They will put it in their bath water to help promote healing. I use it for gallbladder issues. Several years ago it looked like my gallbladder was going to need to be removed. Thanks to my essential oils I was able to avoid that. Now, when my gallbladder flares up I rub rosemary and geranium oil topically over my gallbladder and add tangerine to my water. The combination aids in relieving the pain and stopping the gallbladder attack.

Neuropathy Lotion - You read that right. Some have benefited from a homemade lotion that includes Geranium. If you or someone you know has dealt with neuropathy you know how painful it can be.

Perfume - As a floral oil Geranium is a natural choice for personal scent. You can put a little on your wrists and neck. You can also add it to your body lotion. Or you can mix it with other scents in roller bottles. This site has a recipe for Lavender, Lemon, and Geranium together. https://www.recipeswithessentialoils.com/floral-essential-oil-perfume-sprays/

Fabric Softener - Did you know that Geranium acts as a natural softening agent? Try this homemade fabric softener with Lavender and Geranium for a natural way to keep your clothes fresh and soft!  https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/diy-fabric-softener
